Statement of Intent Draft

My intent for my music video is to show the three stages of emotions a person experiences after a breakup. This links with the theme of love for the course brief, and I will articulate this through point of view shots where the camera follows my main actor who is being broken up with.  I will begin my music video with this concept and as a result , my actor will enter the first stage of the breakup which is sadness. I will convey this by utilizing close up shots of tears running down her face, and wide shots of her eating junk food as a way of comfort. To further portray my actor as sad I will use text at the beginning of this series of shots saying 'first stage; grief' as well as having dark lighting with a harsh contrast on her face to focus on her tears and smudged makeup.

For the next stage, my actor will experience anger. I will achieve this through use of mise en scene such as stereotypical Valentines Day gifts such as flowers, chocolates, cards and balloons. I will use wide shots to show her popping the balloons, cutting the flowers and cards and stomping on the chocolates to create a more comedic display of her anger towards her breakup. Some shots will also be slowed down as well, to convey how dramatic she feels in the moment. I will also use text after these shots saying stage 2- anger.

For the final stage, she will experience growth. This will be shown through the motif of text saying stage 3- moving on. This is where I will show representation as I will use another actor to be the older version of my main actor, that guides her through her sadness and anger and is mainly represented as a friend figure that helps her get over her pain. The both of them will be shown in an over the shoulder mirror shot that implies how they are both connected, and that her older self helps her reach the stage of growth they are already at. The older version of her will be mainly shown as a friend with the two of them in shots together such as a wide, tracking shot of them walking through an outside location. Which is then contrasted with a shot of the main girl walking alone to show she no longer needs the support of another person, and is independent.

The introduction of an older version of my main actor represents how she is going back to tell her younger self how a breakup is not worth dwelling on, and giving her advice she wished she had at the time. This will be the overall message of the music video, despite the initial messages of bitterness shown in the sad and angry scenes, acceptance and moving on is the ultimate goal. `
