Gorillaz- On Melancholy Hill
This music video is interesting because its all animated which fits in with Gorillaz overall aesthetic as a 'virtual band' created by Damon Albarn. It comprises of four band members; Noodle, 2D, Murdoc and Hobbs. They all feature in this music video that begins with Noodle on a sinking ship, that resembles that of the Titanic, thus using intertextuality. Noodle then walks out with a gun and begins to fire. The rest of the music video then shows the band underwater- following the narrative of the story. One key thing about this music video is that it shows a full story and doesn't have any shots of the band just singing which is usually a key element in most music videos. It also links in with other music videos from songs on Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach. that this song features on. Therefore it stands out due to its editing style and focal point.
Lana Del Rey- Video Games
This music video is one of my favourites because Lana shot and edited it herself using clips from other films and music videos as well as shots of herself filmed on her laptop camera. The video comprises of aesthetic clips of couples, old Hollywood films and landscape shots of locations throughout California. All of this is layered with a retro filter to give an old time, nostalgic feel to her music. Lana 's signature is being an old soul and loving all things vintage, which is shown through her music and execution. Black and white shots are interspersed throughout alongside visceral images of Lana singing the lyrics against a blank wall.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers- Can't Stop
This music video is good because its absolutely mental. The band were probably just given loads of props like a bin, tent, tunnel and various other random items and then just told to roll with it. The beginning of the music video shows a tracking shot through a tunnel that lines up with the fast pace of the intro in the song. It then ends with the lead singer stuck inside a wall, unable to move as the song fades. Its an engaging, hilarious music video that fits with the song perfectly and lines up with all the little nuances in the music.
Rage Against The Machine- Sleep Now In The Fire
This music video is one of the most witty and thought provoking ones i've seen, with heavy rock blasting - its set in Wall Street which has been closed for the day. and taken over by them. Then cuts to the game show 'who wants to be filthy fucking rich', which is clearly a knockoff who wants to be a millionaire. However, contestants answer questions based on the economic crisis America is facing, with questions such as how many people live on a dollar a day, and what percentage of wealth in America is owned by the rich. Thus they use their music to raise political and economical questions about the welfare system in the US, which is used to provoke the audience in to that line of thought.
Nirvana- Heart Shaped Box
This music video is interesting because it ties in with the In Utero album cover that features Jesus on the cross, and starts as an origin story of him, except it serves as a parody with jesus being a decrepit old man wearing a Santa hat. It then cuts to shots of the band in the desert playing their instruments. it’s a good music video as it encapsulates the band and shows symbolism between the album cover and the songs message.
