Textual Analysis
My textual analysis takes inspiration from a few music videos that I have incorporated in to my own. One music video I have focused on is Still Don't Know My Name by Labrinth. The music video takes clips from hit HBO TV series Euphoria. Labrinth produced music for the TV show and this song also features in it. The clips are largely shown in dark lighting with use of shadows and strobe lights. Dramatic close ups of the characters bathed in different coloured lights features frequently with the use of colour correction and flashes of light. Zoom shots are used as well as fast paced slide transitions between clips. The overall mood is dramatic and fast with tracking shots of characters walking in order to show their movement and creativity. Use of mise en scene includes the main character, Rue, with glitter sliding down her face. This is a makeup look I will recreate for my own music video with the glitter in replacement of tears in order to convey sadness.
Lily Allen's music video for Smile is another source of inspiration for my own music video, her video focuses on her going through a breakup with shots of her going through stereotypical moments such as eating junk food and lying on her bed, these are wide shots I will recreate with my own music video, but I will switch it up with a pov fridge shot. Her video also takes a comedic angle of showing her enacting revenge on her ex, through putting laxatives in his drink, to paying people to beat him up and wreck his house. My music video will take a different angle with the idea of revenge still present, but more towards the end of the video where the girls are pictured burning their exes belongings. This will show they have moved on from their past relationships. Tracking shots are also used with the camera moving around lily and following her, I will also utilise this for my music video.
Pinks music video for So What is also another music video I will reference with the idea of anger present in the video. My video will focus more on the stages a person experiences when going through a breakup, referencing the insane anger a person can feel as shown in Pinks video. Shots of her riding a lawnmower down the road and her grabbing building tools and wrecking things will be reimagined in my music video with my character chopping up flowers and valentines cards as well as crushing chocolates and popping balloons to show her stage of anger after the breakup.
These music videos have all played a part in helping me cultivate my own with lighting and mise en scene ideas from Labrinth and the ideas of revenge, sadness and anger shown when going through a breakup that feature in Lily Allens music video and Pinks.
